Overview

Stunning work from ILM in bringing the Romulus space station and planetary environments of Alien: Romulus to life.

I worked across a variety of sequences, contributing to set extensions, muzzle flashes, and creature augmentation for the practical effects (Muppet enhancements). I was also involved in achieving a photographic look for the planet rings.

Process & Breakdown

One of the most technically challenging shots was the exterior of the Corbellan as it ascends through dense clouds to exit the planet's atmosphere. I had to blend multiple layers of 2D rain element, and combine them with FX atmos and some extra particle setups in Nuke to generate extra depth.

I was also heavily involved in the elevator sequence, which featured some particularly tricky integration challenges. The practical plates had a lot of haze and complex blinking lights on set, which made the integration harder. Careful attention to light interaction, haze behavior, and timing was essential to make the shots seamless.
