Overview

I worked as Lead Compositor for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 at ILM Sydney, where we delivered over 350 shots in just three months. Despite the tight schedule, our team produced some truly spectacular work.

Sonic 3 was a fast-paced, high-energy project filled with diverse sequences and dynamic VFX challenges. I led compositing for the Vault Sequence and the Final Battle, which featured the Eclipse Cannon Destroyer and its devastating laser beam. These sequences pushed both the technical and creative limits of our team — and made for a fun, high-impact project.

Process & Breakdown

One of my key contributions was developing a custom Gravity Tiles setup entirely in Nuke. This 3D-based system allowed artists to accurately place and manipulate Gravity Tiles within a scene by retrieving location data directly from other departments. The tool generated multiple render passes, giving compositors precise control over look, integration, and flexibility — all within a streamlined workflow.

It was an ambitious sequence delivered on a tight timeline, and a great example of how the right tools and leadership can drive quality under pressure.
